Android users can now transfer eSIMs to any Android smartphone

eSIMs are gradually taking over from physical SIM cards. Even though eSIM transfers are currently a bit pricey, and people are eagerly anticipating the day when it becomes a global standard, adopted by regions worldwide. Following this trend, Google has decided to shift its focus toward providing an eSIM transfer tool for all Android users. However, as of now, the functionality is somewhat limited.

According to a recent report, a user setting up their Galaxy S24 Ultra got a prompt to transfer their eSIM from their older device by scanning a QR code. The source even snagged a screenshot of the pop-up appearing on the Pixel 8 Pro when transferring from the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and vice versa. If this becomes widespread, you can expect it to become a standard feature in more phones down the line.

It’s worth mentioning that Samsung initially introduced its own SIM transfer tool with One UI 5.1, but at first, the process of moving eSIM from one Android device to another was restricted to Galaxy devices. However, the latest update indicates that the functionality is expanding to a broader range, with more devices gaining support.

As of now, it’s important to mention that the eSIM transfer is currently limited to T-Mobile users. Nevertheless, given the gradual adoption of this feature, it’s likely to become a standard for many other devices too. We’re hopeful for a future where transferring your eSIM profiles across devices is a seamless process for everyone. We’ll keep everyone updated as things progress.

Basically, Google’s eSIM transfer tool, introduced at MWC 2023, has been rolled out quietly but effectively. The pop-up has been successfully tested to appear in both directions, whether you’re transferring an eSIM from a Galaxy S24 Ultra to a Pixel 8 Pro or vice versa.

While carrier support is currently limited, this development is a noteworthy milestone in Android’s capability to handle eSIMs. It offers users increased flexibility and convenience in managing their mobile plans across various devices.
