Apple Vision Pro glass reportedly breaking without getting dropped

The Apple Vision Pro is a solid piece of glass and aluminum, but a previous scratch test showed that the company used plastic on the front, so it’s easy to leave permanent marks on it. However, many owners are saying that the front of their AR headset is cracking even when the device is just sitting there doing nothing. This kind of thing would make anyone angry who has to pay $3,499 for a head-mounted wearable, especially when it only comes with a measly 256GB of storage.

A picture shared by u/dornbirn on Reddit shows a crack in the middle of the front of the Apple Vision Pro. The owner said the headset wasn’t dropped but was just put away with the cover on. They noticed the crack in the morning and said the Apple Vision Pro didn’t move or shuffle in the case.

The owner also shared their thoughts on why this might have happened; it could be because of a ‘consistent manufacturing issue’ with the glass, creating enough pressure above the nose to eventually crack.

What happened – last night I polished the front of the headset, packed it away with the cover on, and when I woke up this morning, i see this crack. No drop, no shuffling in the case.

There seems to be a consistent manufacturing issue with the glass – my ignorant guess is the unique form creates some tension above the nose that eventually cracks, even without any outside force.

I have apple care and expect a free replacement when I head in to the genius bar, but for those of you who understandably didn’t spring for the 500$ coverage, this would suck. I hope it’s more rare than i’m making it out to be, but if not, apple better cover this under factory warranty and not consider it accidental damage that would require a hefty repair fee.

Similarly, u/ContributionFar8997 also posted that the Apple Vision Pro was left charging, and when the owner went to get it, there was a visible crack on the front. It’s unlikely that just charging the expensive device would cause a crack to form, so we think it’s a manufacturing issue that needs to be fixed. Apple Support apparently told the owners that it would cost $300 under AppleCare to fix, and without AppleCare, it would cost a huge $800, which is the price of a base iPhone 15.

Usually, if the front glass of the Apple Vision Pro cracks, most people would think it’s the owner’s fault. But it’s worth noting that the front glass is cracking in almost the same spot as the other incident, which suggests it’s a pattern and might affect other users. We’ll have to wait and see if this actually happens, and then it’ll be up to Apple to decide how to take care of its customers.
