Apple is never too late with its latest iPhones, it is almost like clockwork that each year in September we get a new army of iPhones. But, the same can’t be said about other Apple accessories, including the AirTag.
First introduced in April 2021, AirTag was indeed a revolutionary technology three years ago. Simply put, it’s a tracking device for anything and everything, which helps people find their misplaced or lost items such as keys, wallets, bags, vehicles, and even pets using Apple’s ‘Find My’ network.
Cut to 2023, a newer version of the AirTag is still awaited. But the wait may be about to be over, as per a prediction by noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has said that the second-generation AirTag is expected to go into mass production in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Kuo believes that AirTag 2 may be more closely integrated with Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset as part of a spatial computing ecosystem.
Another leaker, LeaksApplePro, also said that the AirTag 2 will likely come with tons of new features, including 3D Precision Finding.
The current AirTag is priced at Rs 3,490. According to Kuo, the sale of AirTag has increased over the years, reaching about 20 million units in 2021 and 35 million in 2022.
The polished stainless steel-framed AirTag is water-resistant and can be customized with some precision etching.
No technology comes without some criticism. AirTag too has faced ire over potential unwanted tracking, which led Apple to add safeguards like notification alerts and it also recently started working with Google to prevent stalking.
To help prevent stalking, an iPhone user will be alerted by their phone if someone else’s AirTag is in their possession for too long. If an AirTag stays out of range of its owner’s device for more than 8 hours, it will begin to alert the person that an AirTag may have been placed in their possession.
As for the pricing, the AirTag 2 will most likely be priced slightly higher than the currently available AirTag.
