Google Maps ‘fuel-efficient routing’ aims to put money back in your pocket

Google introduced a series of India-focused features on its Maps platform, with one standout feature set to roll out by January next year – “fuel-efficient routing.” The innovative feature is poised to impact both four-wheelers and two-wheelers across the country, providing users the ability to save fuel while making sustainable route choices without compromising travel time. Sounds good, let’s take a closer look.

Of course, Machine Learning has to be at the center of all this. Google, in a statement, highlighted the incorporation of AI in this feature, leveraging real-time traffic data, road elevation details, and even the specific vehicle’s engine type. By considering these factors, Google Maps aims to identify routes that not only minimize fuel consumption but also contribute to reducing emissions.

Notably, the fuel-efficient routing feature is already live in several countries. Google has reported substantial global environmental benefits of the AI-driven feature. From October 2021 through September 2023, the fuel-efficient routing feature is estimated to have prevented over 2.4 million metric tons of CO2e emissions globally. Once the feature is released, it can create a huge impact in a market like India.

To enable this feature, users can follow a few straightforward steps:

1. Open the Google Maps app on your mobile device.
2. Tap on your profile picture or initials.
3. Navigate to Settings, then select Navigation Settings.
3. Scroll to Route options.
4. Toggle the “Prefer fuel-efficient routes” setting on or off.
5. Select Engine type and choose accordingly.

Make sure you select the correct engine type for your vehicle. If you miss this step, Google Maps will default to a petrol engine. It’s important to note that energy-efficient routes for electric vehicles (EVs) won’t include stops to charge, providing a streamlined experience for EV users.

Google Maps is probably the most-used navigation app in India. In fact, Apple iPhone users also largely rely on Google Maps and simply ignore the Apple Maps. The upcoming fuel-efficient routing feature will certainly enhance the user experience and contribute positively to the environment by encouraging eco-friendly transportation choices across India.
