How to a screenshot on Chromebook

Grabbing a screenshot on your computer can come in handy for a bunch of stuff. Whether you’re trying to show someone a problem you’re fixing, saving inspiration for your next cool project, or giving a hand to a buddy or relative by demonstrating how to do something, the possibilities are endless. But, the process of taking a screenshot can vary depending on your device and operating system, including Chromebooks and ChromeOS.

The screenshot thing on Chromebooks used to be simple and only worked with some weird keyboard trick for ages. But last year, Google stepped up their game and rolled out a fancy screenshot tool that lets you snap pics and even record your screen. Here’s how you can get it going, what you can do with it, and where to find all your snaps and clips once you’re done.

How to take a screenshot on Chromebook using keyboard shortcut

To get the Screen Capture thing going, you gotta hit three keys at once: Shift, Ctrl, and that Show Windows button. It’s up there on the top row, looks like a window with a couple more windows behind it. Give those a good press, and bam, the toolbar shows up down at the bottom of your screen.

If you just wanna snap the whole screen real quick, without bothering about any particular area or window, just hit Ctrl and that Show Windows key. These keyboard shortcuts work on any Chromebook model. But, some Chromebooks have this special key up top with a little camera icon on it, usually a rectangle with a circle in the middle. When you hit that, the tool just pops up, no need for any fancy key combos.

Thankfully, Google put a shortcut button in the Quick Settings panel for screenshots, so now you never have to rack your brain for those keys. On Chrome’s Shelf, just tap the time to bring up the Quick Settings menu. Then hit the Screen Capture option, and voila, the toolbar comes right up.

The Screen Capture thing doesn’t just do screenshots; it can also handle screen recordings. The switch to go from pics to video is on the left end of the toolbar. To the right of that, you got choices for a full screen snap, a piece of the screen you pick, or a specific window. These tricks work for both photos and videos. Plus, if you click that little settings gear on the toolbar, you can turn the mic on or off while recording, so adding your voice to your captures is a piece of cake.

Where to find screenshot on Chromebook?

Once you grab a screenshot or record something, you can get to it right away from the Clipboard. It keeps the last five things you saved. To check them out, just hit the Everything button (also known as the Search key) and V together.

Your Chromebook has this cool spot on the Shelf called Tote. That’s where your latest screenshots hang out. You can also stick important stuff there, so you don’t have to go digging around every time you need to find that one crucial screenshot.

If your screenshots aren’t on the Clipboard anymore, just head to your files. Open up the Files app on your Chromebook, and you’ll spot your screenshots in the Images folder and your screen recordings in the Videos folder.
