iOS 17.3 is here; new features coming to your iPhones and steps to enable Stolen Device Protection

Apple iOS 17.3 is officially released to worldwide iPhone users after weeks of beta testing with developers and Apple enthusiasts. The third update in the series since its debut in September 2023, iOS 17.3 largely focuses on improving the security of our iPhones, making them almost impenetrable in case of theft and loss of the device.

In addition, there are some notable quirky updates, and fun features actually, along with a dozen of bug fixes and various performance improvements. Let’s take a closer look.

Starting with the biggest feature update, iOS 17.3 brings ‘Stolen Device Protection’ to iPhones. Having been in testing since December 2023, the security feature essentially prevents thieves from locking you out of your Apple ID. Let us explain.

If a thief or a potential one somehow sees you inputting your iPhone’s passcode before stealing it, they can easily change your Apple ID’s password, locking you out of your Apple account. The stolen device protection in iOS 17.3 addresses this problem. The feature blocks users from performing certain sensitive actions on iOS if Face/Touch ID authentication fails.

In simple words, it’s an additional layer of protection to secure your Apple ID if a thief has physical access to your iPhone and also knows your passcode. Though an optional feature, Apple recommends enabling it to ensure your data is protected in case of theft.

Here’s how you can enable the Stolen Device Protection on your iPhone.

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Face ID & Passcode.
3. Scroll down the menu until you see Stolen Device Protection.

Moving on, iOS 17.3 also brings the Collaborative Apple Music Playlists feature. The new feature lets you collaborate on a playlist within the Apple Music app and also allows users to give Emoji reactions to any track in a collaborative playlist

Open the app > create a new playlist or open an existing one > tap the Collaborate button at the top of the playlist > choose to turn on Approve Collaborators to have control over who joins or turn it off to allow anyone with the link to join. Tap Start Collaboration and invite others to join through a message, email, or other listed option.

The iOS 17.3 also brings a new Unity wallpaper featuring captivating floral patterns that come to life with vibrant colors upon waking up the device. You can choose from a diverse range of colors and variations, personalizing your iPhone’s Lock Screen for a visually enchanting experience. It is worth noting that the wallpaper has been introduced to honor Black history and culture in celebration of Black History Month.

The iOS 17.3 changelog also mentions the following updates:

• AirPlay hotel support lets you stream content directly to the TV in your room in select hotels.
• AppleCare & Warranty in Settings shows your coverage for all devices signed in with your Apple ID.
• Crash detection optimizations (all iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models).
