Kia Motors is intensifying its commitment to the Indian automotive market with a bold electric vehicle (EV) strategy. The Korean automaker has unveiled plans to expand its portfolio with new mass-market electric vehicles, a departure from its current focus on premium offerings like the EV6. Unlike the EV6, which targets high-end buyers, the upcoming new EVs– the Kia Carens EV, EV9, and the Clavis EV, will cater to the mid-range and upper mid-range segments, making feature-rich electric mobility slightly more accessible to the masses.

The company’s President and CEO, Ho Sung Song, revealed the plan during Kia’s Investor Day 2024. Song outlined Kia’s EV line-up strategy, emphasizing the introduction of mass-market EV models following flagship launches to offer more choices to the growing EV buyers in India.

Kia Clavis, Carens EV, and the flagship EV9

In line with this strategy, Kia plans to launch two mass-market EVs in India, including the new model- Clavis EV, and the electric variant of Kia’s highly popular MPV- Carens EV, scheduled for release in the second half of 2025. Additionally, the flagship EV9 model is slated for launch in 2024 as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) unit. Sources suggest that the Clavis EV will be a mass-market electric SUV and is codenamed AY-EV. The Carens-based EV is codenamed the KY-EV.

President Song also outlined ambitious sales targets for Kia’s EV segment, aiming to achieve sales of 5,87,000 units of mass-market EV models by 2026, accounting for 66 percent of total EV sales. Kia aims to launch 15 EV models by 2027, with a target of selling 1.6 million EV units by 2030. Kia’s EV strategy involves building a full EV line-up to stimulate demand, particularly in key markets, while enhancing customer experiences and diversifying manufacturing bases in emerging markets.

Kia Carens EV’s Scope in India?

The Kia Carens, renowned for its spacious 7-seater design, upscale interiors, and feature-rich cabin, has garnered a strong foothold in the Indian automotive market. Starting at an attractive price point of Rs. 10.52 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the petrol variant, the Carens stands out with its competitive features and versatile configurations, setting it apart from its competitors such as Maruti Suzuki XL6, and Ertiga.

Moving towards electric mobility, Kia is set to introduce the Carens EV, promising an impressive claimed range of 400-500 km with a single motor setup. Expected to support DC fast charging and V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality, Kia aims to uphold its reputation for feature-rich offerings by equipping the Carens EV with cutting-edge technology features.

Similar to its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, the Carens EV is anticipated to feature dual digital displays (10.25-inch each for infotainment and instrumentation), along with conveniences like wireless phone charging, ventilated front seats, Kia Connect app support, built-in air purifier, 9-speaker setup, and a panoramic sunroof.

Safety remains a priority, with standard six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), and front and rear parking sensors. Additionally, the Carens EV may include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) features for enhanced safety and convenience.

The forthcoming introduction of the Kia Carens EV is poised to expand the company’s presence in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. With an estimated price range between Rs. 18 lakhs and Rs. 27 lakhs, the Carens EV is positioned as a compelling alternative to premium offerings like the BYD E6 and Toyota’s Innova Hycross Hybrid, offering consumers a compelling blend of affordability and advanced technology.
