MediaTek launches Dimensity 6300 to power mid-range smartphones

MediaTek recently revealed its latest chipset, tailor-made for high-quality mid-range smartphones: the Dimensity 6300. Sporting a 6nm design, it boasts two Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.4GHz alongside six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2GHz.

MediaTek claims that their fresh Dimensity 6300 chipset delivers a 10 percent increase in CPU performance compared to the previous year’s Dimensity 6100+ chipset.

Alongside its speedier cores, the Dimensity 6300 chipset packs a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU and MediaTek’s UltraSave 3.0+ tech. This promises 13 to 30 percent better power efficiency than rival options, especially in typical 5G sub-6GHz connectivity scenarios.

MediaTek’s latest chipset now backs displays with resolutions up to 2520 x 1080 pixels and refresh rates of up to 120Hz. In terms of cameras, it’s got native support for 108MP sensors as well as setups with dual 16MP cameras.

Some standout features of the fresh Dimensity 6300 chipset are its Bluetooth 5.2 support, along with compatibility for UFS 2.2 storage and LPDDR4x RAM. MediaTek also announced that the Realme C65 5G will be the first phone to rock this chipset, hitting the market by late April.

Qualcomm also brings new chipset for flagships

Balancing the power consumption of the soon-to-be-released Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 might pose a hurdle for Qualcomm, despite indications that the chipset will be widely manufactured on TSMC’s 3nm ‘N3E’ node. In principle, a superior manufacturing process should enhance the energy efficiency of the flagship SoC.

Yet, according to a tipster, smartphone manufacturers considering the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 for their models may choose to incorporate larger batteries. This move could offset the chip’s increased power consumption by accommodating bigger cells, resulting in extended battery life. There’s speculation that phone makers will equip their flagships featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 with 5,500mAh batteries.

A Weibo post by Digital Chat Station reveals that three flagship devices are currently being tested with substantial 5,500mAh batteries. Considering the tendency of Chinese brands to include large batteries in their smartphones, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if OPPO, Xiaomi, Vivo, or another company decided to adopt this feature.

It’s interesting to mention that the OnePlus 12, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, also sports a 5,500mAh battery. Hence, it’s plausible that one of the devices undergoing testing could be the OnePlus 13. As for Qualcomm’s potential decision to increase power consumption with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, the company might be striving to achieve unparalleled single-core and multi-core performance with their upcoming chipset.

Previously, it was noted that the SoC was tested at clock speeds of 4.00GHz, with one instance even reaching 4.30GHz. Whether these speeds can be sustained remains uncertain. In addition to integrating larger batteries, Qualcomm’s partners will also have to integrate larger vapor chambers to efficiently dissipate the heat.
