Tim Cook confirms Apple is working on gen AI features for iPhones

AI is making waves, with Google and Samsung integrating it into the Pixel 8 series and Galaxy S24 series. Surprisingly, Apple has been quiet on this front, but in a recent investor call, they assured that they won’t be left behind and have plans for AI in the upcoming iPhone.

Yesterday, in Apple’s quarterly earnings call, CEO Tim Cook spilled the beans that they’re cooking up some generative AI features. They’re keeping the details under wraps for now, but we can expect to hear more about these cool features later this year, possibly when iOS 18 drops.

Tim Cook said, In terms of generative AI, which, I’d guess, is your focus, we have a lot of work going on internally as I’ve alluded to before. Our MO, if you will, has always been to do work and then talk about work and not to get out in front of ourselves. And so, we’re going to hold that to this as well. But we’ve got some things that we are incredibly excited about that we’ll be talking about later this year.

Cook kept it tight-lipped about Apple’s AI plans, not giving away any specifics about which devices or platforms it’s headed for. However, the grapevine has been buzzing with rumors and leaks lately, giving us a glimpse of what to expect. It looks like the iPhone will probably be the star player in Apple’s AI game.

The scoop on iOS 17.4 code hints that Siri is gearing up to flex its AI muscles for summarizing stuff, dropping clever reply suggestions in Messages, and spreading its AI vibes to apps like Apple Music, Pages, and Keynote. Apple’s also playing around with various AI models, testing some that work on the device itself and others that tap into the internet.

If you’re wondering when iOS 18 is dropping, put your money on WWDC 2024, probably in early June. That’s when Apple might spill the beans on the nitty-gritty of weaving AI into iOS and other Apple platforms. For the flashy features that consumers love, you might have to wait until they unveil the iPhone 16 in September 2024.
