VinFast, the Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is set to give Tata, MG, Maruti Suzuki, and other automobile brands in India a very tough time with its unique EV offerings. The company has showcased a new entry-level EV – the VF 3 micro electric SUV at the CES 2024, which is reported to hit the Indian roads in 2025. This three-door hatchback, recently patented, brings a unique blend of aggressive design and practical features tailored to the demands of city commuters in India.
Compact yet commanding and rugged stance, the VF 3 boasts dimensions under 3.2 meters, making it an ideal fit for the bustling Indian roads. We can’t ignore the uncanny resemblance to the Maruti Suzuki Jiny. Nevertheless, the distinctive exteriors exude micro SUV vibes, featuring an aggressive front, a sleek closed-up grille, LED headlamps, squared-off ORVMs, LED tail lamps, cladding on bumpers, and a chrome-finished logo. With a generous ground clearance, the micro SUV promises a smooth ride through diverse terrains.
Despite its size, the VinFast VF 3 surprises with a spacious cabin that accommodates four passengers comfortably and can also squeeze in a fifth passenger for short rides. Inside, a 2-spoke steering wheel, digital driver display unit, and a cutting-edge 10-inch infotainment screen equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay cater to tech-savvy drivers. The interior will be as good and premium as MG’s Comet EV.
The micro SUV will also emphasize practicality with fully foldable second-row seats. The VinFast VF 3 will feature automatic climate control, cruise control, and dual airbags, emphasizing VinFast’s commitment to safety and convenience. The micro EV’s 550-liter boot space further enhances its suitability for urban lifestyles.
The VinFast VF 3 will most likely be offered in two variants- Eco and Plus with Eco offering a 201-kilometer range on a full charge, and the Plus variant extending the range to up to 250/300 kilometers. The specific motor configurations are yet to be disclosed.
Poised to rival the MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV, the VF 3 distinguishes itself with an aesthetically pleasing and aggressive design, offering a better road presence. While comparisons highlight its visual appeal, the Tiago EV holds onto its practicality crown, acknowledging the nuanced preferences of Indian drivers.
VinFast’s foray into the Indian market extends beyond the VF 3. The recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Tamil Nadu government, accompanied by an investment commitment of approximately Rs 425 crore for the initial five years, positions VinFast strategically in India’s burgeoning EV sector.
Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, is set to host VinFast’s fourth global plant, marking a crucial step in the company’s expansive global strategy. VinFast also has plans to fortify its presence in the Indian EV ecosystem by collaborating with the authorities for charging infrastructure development.
As for the pricing, the VF 3 is expected to be priced in the range of 7 to 10 lakhs and will arrive in a vibrant color palette.
