Volkswagen is gearing up to introduce its all-electric ID.4 SUV. The upcoming premium electric SUV will mark the German automaker’s foray into the Indian electric car market, bringing a globally recognized model to the rapidly evolving EV market.
Set to be the first electric vehicle from Volkswagen in India, the ID.4 will be imported via the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route, a strategic move by the automaker to assess consumer readiness for electric offerings. The decision to launch the ID.4 stems from Volkswagen’s commitment to embracing sustainable solutions and aligning with the global shift towards electric mobility.
Volkswagen’s exploration of the Indian EV market dates back to 2020 when the company began testing the ID.4 for potential inclusion in its Indian portfolio. The first sightings of the ID.4 testing on Indian roads occurred in August 2022, and since then, the electric SUV has undergone multiple rounds of testing over the past year.
Recognizing the unique challenges of India’s diverse and sometimes unpredictable infrastructure, Volkswagen aims to fine-tune the ID.4’s suspension, cabin technology, and various other characteristics to better suit local conditions. This adaptation is critical to providing a seamless driving experience, addressing concerns related to road conditions, and ensuring optimal performance on Indian roads.
In terms of pricing, the ID.4 is expected to be positioned in the premium segment, ranging between 50 to 60 lakhs. This places the electric SUV in direct competition with other premium EVs in the Indian market, such as the Kia EV6, BYD’s EV offerings, and the Hyundai Ioniq.
Volkswagen ID.4 specifications
The electric SUV boasts an impressive range of 510-545 kilometers and an efficiency ranging from 6.2 to 6.6 km per kWh. The 77kWh battery powers the vehicle, with a maximum charge speed of 135kW or 175kW. The charging times for AC and DC are 12 hours 40 minutes and 28 minutes (0-80% at 135kW), respectively.
The electric SUV is equipped with power outputs of 282hp and 335hp, providing a potent driving experience. Additionally, the ID.4 offers a spacious 543-liter boot space, catering to practical considerations for potential buyers.
Volkswagen isn’t going to stop with just ID.4. The car manufacturer is already contemplating its second EV offering for the Indian market. The ID.2, scheduled for global launch in late 2025 or 2026, is under evaluation for potential introduction in India. Both these 5-star rated electric vehicles will offer tech-savvy cabins, excellent aerodynamics and stability, and notable road presence.
In all, Elon Musk should be ready to make special provisions to compete with BYD’s and Volkwagen’s internationally acclaimed EVs as the shit is about to get real now.
